NORWALK - Norwalk police say more than a dozen people were hurt when a swing ride malfunctioned in the Kid's Cove area of the Norwalk Oyster Festival yesterday.
Officials say 18 were hurt in the accident. Authorities say 12 children and one adult were taken to the hospital. All have been released, except for an 8-year-old boy, who is being treated for injuries which are not life-threatening.
Investigators say the ride apparently lost power, causing its swings to crash. The incident happened at around 2 p.m.
The victims were taken to hospitals in Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport for treatment.
The owner of Stewart Amusement in Trumbull contacted News 12 to say it was one of his company's rides that somehow malfunctioned. He says his company is cooperating with state investigators, and adds that the swing ride was inspected by state officials on Friday. He says it was deemed to be safe and operational.
A parent who witnessed the accident says the ride suddenly stopped, causing all of its swings to crash repeatedly into the base of the ride.
Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the incident.
