12 Hudson Valley Catholic schools at risk of closing

NEWS12 WESTCHESTER: Eight area Catholic schools are in danger of closing, the Archdiocese of New York said. (Nov. 26, 2012)

Twelve Catholic elementary schools in the Hudson Valley are at risk of closing in 2013, according to a list released by the Archdiocese of New York on Monday evening.

"The archdiocese has been subsidizing these schools with millions and millions of dollars each year," archdiocesan spokesman Joseph Zwilling said. "We can't afford to do that indefinitely. If we continue along this path, pretty soon the whole system could collapse."

The archdiocese closed 26 elementary and two high schools in 2011.

Local regional boards and reconfiguration committees this fall began evaluating the long-term viability of schools for the archdiocese statewide. The effort was intended to stabilize the number of schools across the archdiocese and eliminate the need for future school closings, according to a news release.

The local groups looked at enrollment and the financial, academic and local demographics of 159 elementary schools. Of those, 26 statewide were listed as at risk of closure in June 2013, according to the release.

"I want to express my deep appreciation to the laity and clergy serving on the local regional boards and ad hoc reconfiguration committees," Timothy J. McNiff, superintendent of schools, said in the statement. "These are difficult, but necessary, decisions and, working together, we will ensure that our Catholic elementary schools are stronger than ever."

The school pastors and principals will have the opportunity to make their case to the reconfiguration committee in December. Final closure decisions will be made in January 2013.
