Two Georgia men were found hiding in the bushes near a Fishkill motel after a triple stabbing prompted a land and air manhunt Wednesday, the Fishkill Police Department said.
The men, 18-year-old Yimith Rodriguez and 24-year-old Freddy Rodriguez, were staying at Fishkill's Extended Stay Motel with three acquaintances when an argument early Wednesday morning escalated to violence, cops said.
The suspects allegedly stabbed and slashed their three victims, who range in age from 23 to 31, and bolted from the motel room where the argument began a few minutes after 6 a.m., according to police.
Cops responded to a 911 call and found the three wounded men, then called in the New York State Police for help as they fanned out and searched for the suspects.
Yimith Rodriguez and Freddy Rodriguez didn't get very far, police said -- the motel is bordered to the west by an expansive wooded area and to the east by Route 9, but patrol cars arrived so quickly the suspects were forced to hunker down and hide among bushes near the motel, cops said.
They were spotted by troopers circling above in a helicopter, and investigators brought them into custody.
Yimith Rodriguez was charged with felony second-degree assault as well as misdemeanor weapons possession and obstructing governmental administration.
Freddy Rodriguez was charged with two counts of second-degree felony assault, two counts of misdemeanor weapons possession and one count of obstructing governmental administration. Both men are from Atlanta. It wasn't immediately clear whether they were related, although they share a home address in Atlanta.
Detectives believe they found the weapon used in the attack. All five people involved were staying at the motel while working local jobs, police said. Detectives weren't sure what prompted the violent disagreement.
One victim, 23, was recovering at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh from a stab wound to his stomach and a slash wound to his left wrist. The two other victims, ages 31 and 29, were brought to Saint Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Poughkeepsie for minor slash and stab wounds. None of the injuries was life-threatening, cops said.
Fishkill police said they were still investigating and anticipate filing additional charges.
