Flip Pizza in Mineola closing
If you’ve got a yen for the inventive pistachio pie from the Neapolitan wood-burning oven at Flip Pizza, better hightail it on over to Mineola soon. The artisanal pizza restaurant, which opened this past November and received 2½ stars, will be closing soon.
What will be replacing it isn't yet certain, said co-owner Cliff Magri who, with his brother, Jonathan, also owns several Five Guys Burgers and Fries eateries in Nassau County.
One of the original partners, pizza maker Frank Blasi, sold his share in the business to the Magri brothers. When reached at his Port Chester restaurant, Blasi said it was just too difficult going back and forth between Westchester and Long Island several times a week. Both Blasi and Magri agreed that it was necessary to have someone knowledgeable and passionate about artisan pies on site, in order to educate the dining public about the genre. Said Magri: ”People would ask for a slice and then request chicken on top of it.”
Right now, the future of the site is unclear. The Magri brothers might sell the place entirely or else bring in another operator. And although there has been customer interest in purchasing the Neapolitan wood oven, no sale has yet been finalized. Magri left open the possibility of reopening with a traditional gas pizza oven plus the original wood-burning model.
