The newly appointed captains of the St. Anthony's boys soccer team, seniors Justin Carfora and Nick Cestaro, have had no trouble motivating the bunch for the upcoming season.

Their message?

"All we have to do is remind them of last year and the terrible feeling we had walking off the field after losing," Carfora said.

Carfora and Cestaro were on last year's team, which lost to Chaminade, 4-2 on penalty kicks in the CHSAA final. It was the only time St. Anthony's (15-3-2) lost to a league opponent last season. Both players remember it well and both have their sights set on flipping the script this year.

"It’s really important because a lot of my friends are on Chaminade and they let me know about it all the time," said Cestaro, a midfielder.

While they were more of a defensive team last year, the Friars expect to have a a stronger offensive unit, according to players and coach Gene Buonaiuto. Juniors, including Beau Hornberger, are expected to step up defensively.

Teammates have particularly raved about Hornberger's potential.

"He plays top competition year in and year out so I don’t think he’ll have much of a problem in our league," Cestaro said.

MichaelAngelo Sini, who Carfora described as a "true forward who can help a lot on the offensive end," and senior midfielder TJ Butzke lead the potent offense along with the two captains.

"Most kids in our league can't keep up with Butzke because he’s so tiny and quick and manages to go around people like they're not even there," said Carfora, a midfielder. "He also has a powerful shot that you wouldn’t expect from a smaller guy."

Getting the juniors more involved will be especially important this season, the captains said, to returning to the league final.

Said Cestaro, "That's the ultimate motivation to jell with one another quickly."
