The Jericho boys soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Byram Hills of Section I to move to 11-0-1 overall. Byram Hills falls to 10-2.

Senior Derek Medolla scored in the 48th minute off an assist from senior Harrison Reiber. Senior goalie Ari Lewis had five saves in the shutout. The Jayhawaks have not allowed a goal in nine consecutive games.

Byram Hills was previously ranked eighth in Class A in the 2012 New York State Soccer Poll listed on the Nassau County boys soccer website. The Bobcats are now ranked tenth after the loss, while Jericho stays in the second spot.

“It was a great judgment game for us to see where exactly we are,” Jericho coach Dani Braga said. “We wanted to see how we would do against a perennial top-10 team.”

Braga said last night’s matchup had the atmosphere of a playoff game, with around 1500 fans in attendance at Robbins Lane Park in Syosset. He said he hopes this game will prepare his team for the last stretch of the season going into the playoffs.

“The kids understand this is the type of game they will see from now on,” Braga said. “There won’t be any easy games from here on out. They understand they have to bring this type of energy every single game from now on.”

The Jayhawks will play three games this week to close out the season: Monday at New Hyde Park, Wednesday at South Side, and Friday at home versus Wantagh. Then it’s the playoffs, and Jericho is looking to make another run at a state championship.

“We proved to ourselves that we can be one of the best teams in the state,” Braga said. “They believe right now that they can defend their title and win another one this year.”
