Long Island baseball's rising stars for 2013
Jesse Berardi, Commack, SS, Jr.: Smooth fielder with outstanding range. Left-handed stick who uses the entire field. Heavily recruited by D-I schools.
Mitch Calandra, Floral Park, C, Soph.: Two-year starter who threw out 17 base stealers as a freshman. Hit .333 with three home runs.
Chris Cepeda, Ward Melville, P/IF, Jr.: Transferred from Comsewogue and brings a nasty slider and moving fastball. Had a 1.45 ERA and four wins as a sophomore.
Mike Columbi, Center Moriches, 3B/P, Jr.: All-League selection batted .400 with 27 RBIs. Earned Gold Glove Award for third base in Suffolk.
Alex Cosenza, Massapequa, P/1B, Jr.: Pinpoint-control lefthander who pounds the strike zone. Crafty pitcher who could lead the Chiefs to the title.
Nick Daley, North Shore, C/P, Jr.: Two-year starter and will also move to the mound where he was 3-1 last year. Struck out 18 in 27 innings with a devastating curveball.
Jake Doyle, Seaford, C, Soph.: Batted .380 as an All-Conference selection during his freshman season.
Chris Faison, Floyd, OF/P, Jr.: Speedy leadoff hitter that can be the catalyst for any offense. Batted .345 last year.
Aaron Floyd, Longwood, OF/P, Jr.: Slammed five home runs and drove in 23 runs as a sophomore. Clocked at 91 mph at Perfect Game nationals. Committed to Stony Brook.
Joe Flynn, Ward Melville, 3B/P, Soph.: Big-time hitting prospect. Hit .355 with two homers and 16 RBIs as a freshman. Had a 4-2 record and 1.55 ERA in League I.
Lucas Hall, Seaford, P, Soph.: The 6-foot, 160-pound lefty had a 5-3 record during an All-League freshman campaign.
Adam Heidenfelder, MacArthur, P, Jr.: A 6-foot-4, 240-pound righty with a fastball in the upper 80s, quality off-speed pitches. Averages 17 K per nine innings. Big-time prospect.
Bobby Honeyman, Massapequa, SS, Jr.: All-Nassau selection who will close and play shortstop. Excellent all-around talent.
Tommy Joannou, Calhoun, CF, Sr.: All-Conference selection with excellent speed and range in the outfield. Expects to lead Colts back to playoffs.
Mark Martinez, Division, P/3B, Jr.: Finished with a 2-4 record but an ERA under 3.00. Strikes out one batter per inning.
Dan McEvoy, Westhampton, 2B, Soph.: Hit .396 with 21 runs scored as a freshman. Runs a 6.7 60-yard dash and highly regarded as a D-I prospect.
Frank Moscatiello, Rocky Point, P/IF, Jr.: Power pitcher who had a 4-1 record and a 1.55 ERA. Averages a strikeout an inning. Blue chip prospect.
Tyler Osik, Shoreham-Wading River, 3B/C, Jr.: Excellent hitter with gap power. Verbal commit to Hofstra.
Jack Piekos, Bayport-Blue Point, P/OF, Jr.: Lefty had a 4-2 record with 44 strikeouts in 44 innings with a 2.68 ERA. Laos batted .400 with seven doubles and 15 RBIs.
Keven Pimentel, Shoreham-Wading River, P, Jr.: Moved back to Long Island after two years in Dominican Republic. Righthander tabbed as D-I prospect with fastball clocked at 90 mph.
Tom Read, Plainedge, P, Jr.: Pitched quality relief last year with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings and a 2-1 record and 2.00 ERA.
Michael Reilly, Hicksville, OF/P, Jr.: All-League as a sophomore after he batted .337. Hard-throwing Division I righthanded prospect.
Andrew Ris, Carey, P, Jr.: Coming off labrum surgery. Hit .344 as a sophomore and will be counted on as the staff ace this spring.
Brendan Spagnuolo, Chaminade, P, Jr.: One of those underclassmen who will make a splash this year. Hard-thrower with velocity at 88-91 mph. Verbal commitment to Vanderbilt.
Brennan Strovink, Rocky Point, 1B, Jr.: The 6-foot-2, 240-pound slugger led Suffolk with six home runs and 26 RBIs.
Chris Tracz, Plainview JFK, C, Jr.: Batted .353 and threw out 75 percent of base stealers. All-Conference player, highly recruited by D-I schools.
Chris Weiss, Longwood, 3B/P, Jr.: Hard-throwing righty who also hit .377 with 17 RBIs. D-I prospect.
