Middle Country gymnastics wins League III championship

It had been eight years since Middle Country gymnastics won a championship title. This year, not only did they win the title in League III, but they finished undefeated, giving head coach Melissa Valentino something to be exceptionally proud of.

“All girls competed on this team and no girl was left behind,” Valentino said.

The Cougars finished the season with a team average of 147.96.

During their last meet, Middle Country defeated Whitman, 144.675-116.475. Senior Samantha Lesmeister won the all-around with a score of 32.79 and made All-County for the second year in the row.

“Samantha was a top performer and MVP of the team,” Valentino said. “She led each meet with her all-around score and event placement.”

Six girls made All-League this season, including Gianna Demers, Gabrielle Pelletteri, Hailey Levine and Kaleigh Lagville-Graham. Seventh graders Sierra Vighi and Isabella Mandarino also made the cut.

“These seventh graders impressed us with their floor routines and placing as All-League gymnasts on floor,” Valentino said.

All of these gymnasts will individually compete in the coaches individual meet on Saturday, and Valentino is excited to see how far they can go. After their first championship title since 2005, she believes that Middle Country has a road of success ahead of them.

“We look forward to seeing the future success of Middle Country’s gymnastics.”
