Recent Long Island high school grads excel at USA Juniors

Long Island Track dominance doesn’t end when the graduation caps come off. Here’s a look at how some locals did at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held this weekend at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Huntington’s Kelsey Margey, a Villanova freshman and Friends Academy graduate, won the 1,500 in 4:25.45. Margey made the Newsday All-LI Track and Field team in 2012 and the All-LI Indoor Track and Field team in 2010 and 2011. She was selected to the All-LI Track and Field and Cross Country second team in 2011.

Olicia Williams, a freshman at Baylor, won the junior 800 in 2:06.35. The St. Anthony’s stand-out was selected to both the Indoor Track and Track and Field team in 2011. She made the Indoor Track second team in 2012.

Old Brookville’s Brianna Nerud, a North Shore High School graduate, won the junior 3000 steeplechase in 10:15.67. Nerud attends Syracuse. She was the 2012 Newsday Track and Field player of the year. She was selected to the All-LI Indoor Track first team in 2011 and 2012 and the All-LI Cross Country team in 2011.

Bay Shore’s Jessica Gelibert, who attends Coastal Carolina, finished third in the 400-hurdles in 57.29. She also ran the junior 100-hurdles in 14.16, good for fourth. While at Bay Shore HS, Gelibert was on the All-LI track and field team in 2011 and 2012. She was on the indoor track All-LI second team in 2011 and 2012.

Thomas Awad, an East Norwich native, won the junior 5000 in 15:00.67. Awad runs for Penn. While at Chaminade he was selected Newsday All-LI Athlete of the Year for Cross Country in 2011 and Indoor Track in 2012. He was selected to the All-LI team for Indoor Track in 2011. Awad was given second team honors for Track and Field in 2011 and 2012 and Cross Country in 2010.

Levittown’s Ryan Billian, a freshman at SUNY Buffalo, placed seventh in the junior 110-hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.34. The Division High School product was selected to the All-LI Track and Field second team in 2012.
