“The accolades and awards will continue to be heaped upon superstar Katie Trombetta, and she deserves them all.” – Stephen J. Haynes

In news that will surprise few – few who? – Katie Trombetta today was named an All-American for the second time by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Sachem East midfielder was among 16 girls from around the country bestowed first-team honors.

The junior, who is a member of Team USA’s Under-17 squad, was a third-team All-American selection in 2011 and, last week, was named to the All-Region team for a second time. This past season, she led the Flaming Arrows to a second consecutive state Class A championship and was Long Island’s top scorer with 40 points (15 assists). That was in addition to stellar defense.

Trombetta two months ago verbally committed to the University of Michigan to play field hockey, and recently opted to give up basketball to focus on this sport year-round.

Trombetta was the only New Yorker who made the national first team. Lakeland’s Gianna Bensaia was on the second team and Emily Conroe of Greene Central School was a third-teamer.
