Tricks of the Trade
A little Halloween was in the air Friday night at Smithtown West, in the form of a couple of trick-or-treat, fake-you-off-your-feet maneuvers.
Visiting Riverhead struck first, employing a fake punt on its first possession. The Blue Waves were at midfield, facing a fourth-and-two and lining up in a punt formation. But instead, the snap went directly to blocking back Jaron Greenidge, who barreled ahead three yards for the first down.
Think that play wasn’t important? On the next snap, Jeremiah Cheatom started off tackle, cut back to the middle and bolted 47 yards for the first touchdown of a game Riverhead eventually won, 23-16.
One reason Smithtown West kept it that close was because of its own brand of razzle-dazzle in the third quarter. Trailing 17-10 and facing a fourth-and-9 at the Riverhead 17, the Bulls sent out strong-legged John Pavacic for an apparent 34-yard field-goal attempt.
But holder Ryan Keenan took the snap, stood up and found Anthony D’Aprile open down the right side and floated a pass that was caught for a 10-yard gain and a huge first down. Two plays later, Logan Greco powered in four 4 yards out to make it 17-16 and set up an exciting fourth quarter.
Well-executed, entertaining stuff.
