PATERSON - A four-alarm fire ripped through a church in Paterson Wednesday.

The blaze broke out late Wednesday night at the Central Baptist Church on East 20th Street.

Flames quickly spread through the wooden structure.

Firefighters say it was already burning out of control when they arrived on the scene. They say they struggled to put out the flames, in part, because of extreme heat and humidity.

The church was razed early Thursday because the steeple was in a precarious position.

One firefighter was treated and released for an unknown injury.

It's unclear what sparked the blaze.
