SOUTH PLAINFIELD - A former Army medic was honored with nine service medals in his hometown of South Plainfield Friday.

Francis McNair enlisted in the Army in 1941 and was deployed overseas. He was in France on D-Day and recalls flying into the battlefield on a glider to tend to wounded American soldiers.

At 97 years old, he sat with his wife Alice at the American Legion Post on his special day. McNair says he has been overwhelmed by the attention he has received.

"Well, it's a great day," he says. "This is a wonderful moment for us."

Alice is 95 years old. On Sept. 20, the couple will celebrate 72 years of marriage.
