A visit to Maureen's Kitchen in Smithtown

One of the best places to go for a great meal in Smithtown is Maureen's Kitchen. We go there all the time, and we like it so much, we decided to write a story about it for Kidsday.

When we visited Maureen's, we were greeted by Kathy, who has been working there for 29 years. She has been there longer than any other employee. She served us hot chocolate and whipped cream. She told us that breakfast is one of the busiest times and people love the croissant French toast special. They serve anywhere from 100 to 500 customers every day.

We also met Christine Dernbach, who is one of Maureen's daughters. She told us that she, her brother, Kevin, and sister, Doreen, all work there, too. We asked her all about the cows that decorate the restaurant and property. Christine said, "There are at least 200 cow trinkets in the display case. Most came from my mom, but customers and vendors have brought some to us, too. My mom grew up on a dairy farm upstate, so there were lots of cows. My mom also handmade all the curtains and put so much hard work and love into decorating."

You also have a cool real motorcycle in the front of the restaurant in a glass case? Where did that come from? "My mom worked with someone from Harley-Davidson and they designed it just for our restaurant. My mom is really proud of it."

We asked Christine, "What do you think your mother, Maureen, is most proud of?" She said, "She is most proud of us children carrying on the tradition here at Maureen's and running this great restaurant."

Maureen's Kitchen is at
