SPARTA - A mother in Sparta has been arrested after a crash that injured both her and her 8-year-old son.

Anna Phillips, 26, is accused of being drunk at the time of the crash last Friday night. Sparta police say she lost control of the car along a rural road, hitting two utility poles before flipping over and slamming into a tree.

Prosecutors say Phillips' blood alcohol content was almost four times the legal limit, and her Ford Focus was going much faster than the 45 mph limit.

"It's very alarming to say the least," says Sgt. John Paul Beebe. "It's bad enough to put yourself at risk and other people on the road.  But the fact that she brought her child along for the ride is unbelievable."

Phillips and her son were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. They were released Thursday after spending several days in intensive care. Both were wearing seat belts.

Phillips was charged with DUI and child endangerment.
