The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene

When I learned that Michelangelo Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Manorville had closed, I decided to call around to a few similarly named spots for more information. None, as it turned out, had any connection with that particular restaurant.
But from that search came an appreciation of the sheer multitude of pizza/pasta places in Eastern Suffolk County, and a few in Nassau, named...Read more »
There are wine tastings and wine dinners. Here's a wine cruise.
Bedell Cellars offers a cruise Friday on the Peconic Star Express, leaving from Greenport and going around Shelter Island. It's from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Cutchogue producer's wines, local cheeses and a raw bar will be available during the cruise. Cost: $75. If you're a Bedell wine club member, it's $60.
To reserve, either...Read more »
Sancho’s Cantina & Grill in Massapequa Park, under the same ownership as the nearby Mary’s Pizza and Adam’s Rib, opened a few months ago with a Tex-Mex menu and 12 flat screen TVs, for the sports-minded. The night I passed by, the French windows in the front were open to the street and a few people were dining at sidewalk tables.
On the menu: beef empanadas ($6.95), a Quixote cheese...Read more »
As summer draws to a close, I’m trying to cram as many tomatoes and as much corn onto the menu as possible. Here are some thoughts on tomato sandwiches. As for corn, I’ve become enamored of roasting it in the oven, where it picks up a nice toasty flavor.
The traditional method of cooking corn involves a long wait for a huge quantity of water to come to a boil. Grilling it is delicious but...Read more »
There's been a change for the better at Ephesus Mediterranean & Turkish Cuisine in Massapequa Park. Good as the modest-looking restaurant originally was, new chef-owner Funda Duygun takes it to a higher level.
To start, an assortment of cold appetizers ($11.95) included ezme, a spicy vegetable salad, tahini-rich hummus, a vibrant patlican salatasi, eggplant salad, and garlicky...Read more »
On this dreary day, Jonathan's Ristorante in Huntington brightens things up.
There's a lot of competition downtown and Jonathan's has contributed to it for many years. It's the kind of spot that could turn very picky eaters into regulars, both for the flavorful food and unpretentious style.
And, when the sun comes out again and the temperature allows, it's a fine place for a last bit...Read more »
What’s cooking at Maggie’s Raw Love Cafe in Rockville Centre? Technically, nothing, since the eatery, situated in the Blue Firmament Holistic Center, serves only raw vegan fare. But that doesn't mean the place doesn't generate any heat.
Sheiva Gourdai, who co-owns the center and cafe with its chef/namesake Maggie Fils-Aime, said it evolved from a juice bar and had been operating weekends only...Read more »
I grew up in New Haven, where clam pizza rivals Yale University as the city’s greatest draw. Outside of the Elm City, clam pies are hard, though not impossible, to find.
So I was happy to finally make it to Foody’s in Water Mill, whose clam pie I'd been hearing about for years. Foody’s pie isn’t the stark clam-and-garlic affair of my youth, but more of a flatbread topped with clams oreganata...Read more »
This Saturday night Madison’s on Hillside will host a wine dinner with Bruno Tait, co-owner of his family’s winery, Tait Wines in Australia’s Barossa Valley.
While Tait discusses his winemaking philosophy, the restaurant will be pouring two of his wines, The Ball Buster ($48 bottle, $13 glass), a gutsy blend of shiraz, merlot and cabernet sauvignon; and the 2005 Basket Press Shiraz ($80 bottle),...Read more »
Out on the North Fork last week, I stopped by the newly opened Blue Canoe in Greenport, which takes over the waterside spot long occupied by the Chowderpot Pub. This is one of the nicest outdoor perches in Greenport, with views of the Peconic Bay and Shelter Island. But it was so hot and muggy that we just ate indoors.
The Blue Canoe’s ship-shape interior is sleek but casual, with an upended...Read more »
