Life on Long Island
'Xmas in July' parties
Perhaps it’s due to the wilt-inducing heat wave that took place a few days ago -- or maybe it’s just a coincidence -- but some of the Island’s hot-weather hot spots are doing “Xmas in July” parties this week, events that lean on Kriss Kringle for theme and inspiration. Here are two solid choices, one in each of LI's counties:
Since Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill “popped” up in Island Park (15 Railroad Place, 516-432-7677)) back in July 2011, it has remained a hot stop for summery good times – a feat easily achieved with its sand-filled courtyard, water views and laid-back attitude. In fact, the Pop’s personality is so pleasant, it’s almost a shame that this is only a warm-weather venue (open May-Sept.), as one could imagine what sort of year-end, winter holiday blowout could be mustered by such a party-centric hangout.
Well, wonder no longer, for on Wednesday, July 24, Pop’s is throwing an “Xmas in July” bash, and it looks to be a season-bending soiree.
The DJ will start spinning at 7 p.m., and the drink specials – which while yet to be revealed, have been noted to be “holiday themed.” Guests aren’t required to dress in ugly sweaters or anything overly woolen, but women should keep in mind that the lady deemed decked out as the top “Sexy Summer Elf” is in line to win a $1,000 cash prize (this contest begins at 10 p.m.).
The winter holidays in Montauk often involve festive light displays and good spirits – as well as heavy jackets and scarfs – with those aforementioned garments necessary to battle the icy blasts of December air that regularly gust in off the Atlantic Ocean until (at least) spring.
However, The Sloppy Tuna (148 South Emerson Ave., Montauk, 631-647-8000) has decided to put a little “jingle” into one of its seaside summer mingle-fests with a “Christmas in July” bash set for Thursday, July 25 at 9 p.m. – making this a rare Christmas affair that is actually beach-friendly.
Although there is never a dress code at the ‘Tuna, holiday-inspired clothing is recommended for this event, with a few of those guests that arrive dressed in themed flair possibly winning prizes and giveaways. There will be a “Christmas Photo Booth” available plus drink specials at the bar – and for those who need an additional fix of yuletide energy, “Santa Claus” himself is scheduled to join the party at some point.
