Almost everyone who has ever gone out to a lounge, club or bar knows that – except in the case of a jukebox – hearing songs you and your friends want can be a fruitless desire. If the music is canned or piped in, there’s no one in control – and if there’s a DJ, many times special requests go unfilled, sometimes even vehemently denied. But at Blend Wine & Tapas in Hauppauge, you can pick out plenty of the evening’s audio offerings; in fact, you can do so before even leaving home.

Blend is brand-new on the scene, with an opening day of only last Tuesday (July 10). Owned by Pace’s Catering next door, it’s housed in its own building, and features a lounge, main dining room and outdoor patio. The menu (as the sign says) has many small plates from which to choose – as well as entrées, salads and a selection of mussel dishes – but Blend is also a late-night hang, with a bar both inside and out. Live music plays Thursday thru Saturday nights, but those acts take a stage on the patio – inside, the music comes from an iPod station. It is there, located behind the hostess stand where you can put your musical tastes to work, for while there will be a house device in place, guests are completely invited to bring their own portable along and dock away.

Of course, there will be some limits imposed – but mainly concerning whether the music brought to run is offensive, unsuitable or boring – and Blend management has final say on what plays. But according to the staff, the offer is open seven nights a week -- so if you believe your iTunes money is well-spent, now you have a chance to see if your favorite jams speak to the masses.
