It was a busy winter for Joe Celano, owner of La Casa Cafe at Crab Meadow Beach in Northport. Celano, along with two members of La Casa's crew, remodeled the interior of the restaurant without professional help. Two brothers, Josh and Dave Cook, are the co-owners of the new Cook’s Scratch Kitchen & Bakery, which replaces 1014 Coffee House in Northport. Josh Cook said the place is both a cafe and bakery that serves breakfast and lunch. Just about everything served is made “from scratch.”

Driven by a craving for pasta e fagioli, I landed at Torcellos in East Northport one recent afternoon. What I found was an irresistible lunch deal which, at $9.95, included soup or a salad plus half a hero or lunch pasta — or else soup plus a salad. That combination turned out to be my choice. All too often, a sign posted on a restaurant reading “closed for renovations” turns out to mean “outta here.” Many will be relieved to learn that this was not the case for Tim’s Shipwreck Diner in Northport, which posted such a notice last week. Under the same ownership as the nearby Nina’s Pizzeria, the space — which last housed The Original Kasper's Hot Dogs — was conceived to run in the manner of Chipotle Mexican Grill.
