BRIDGEPORT - Hundreds of Bridgeport children got free school supplies today thanks to the efforts of a woman trying to commemorate her son.
April Barron lost her son, 27-year-old Iroquois Alston, two years ago. Since then, she has been trying to give back to the youth of the community in his name.
The event was held today at Care Around the Clock Daycare on State Street. Barron says that education was important to her son, and she wants to better the community in a way that he would approve.
Alston was on parole when he was fatally shot, and Barron says he was trying to educate himself to rebuild his life.
Barron says the supplies were donated by local businesses, including a sizable donation from U-Haul.
