Brooklyn library restricts access to book
NEW YORK - NEW YORK (AP) — The Brooklyn Public Library has restricted access to a book whose controversial title character will be featured in a Steven Spielberg movie.
The library system took the rare step after a patron complained "Tintin au Congo" (Tehn-Tehn aw) portrayed Africans as monkeys.
The book is accessible only to staff. Patrons must make an appointment to see it.
Others have complained the 1929 character by cartoonist Herge (Hur-ZHAY) depicts Africans as simpleminded, subhuman and half-savage.
Makers of the Spielberg movie, due out in 2011, say they won't use any objectionable material.
Borders Group, Inc., moved the book from the children's area of its British and U.S. stores to the adults graphic novels section after complaints in 2007.
