Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center has launched a $2.5 million capital campaign to pay for renovations to its main lobby and entrance.

The hospital said it has already raised $1.3 million toward the goal, and that the project recently broke ground and would be conducted in stages.

The lobby will be named after Walter and RoseMarie Ladick, who made the lead gift toward the renovations. Walter Ladick is also a former chairman of the board at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

During construction, visitors are being directed to the north parking lot and will enter the hospital through the Knapp Cardiac Care Center entrance.

Brookhaven Memorial opened the 60,000-square-foot Knapp Cardiac Care Center earlier this year.

The hospital also received tax breaks and other economic assistance to purchase and renovate the closed John J. Foley Nursing Home in Yaphank, the Brookhaven Town Industrial Development Agency said early this year.

The agency has approved a package of tax breaks that will be used toward the $15 million purchase and $23 million renovation of the nursing home.

Suffolk County agreed last year to sell the nursing home to the East Patchogue-based hospital.

The hospital plans to reopen the five-story building next year and offer hemodialysis, substance abuse rehabilitation, assisted living and other services.
