KEY EVENT: High hopes for a lower jobless rate. In March, the Long Island unemployment rate fell to 4 percent, the lowest number for any March since 2005. And there’s growing optimism the April number will be even better. The recent U.S. jobs report showed the national unemployment rate in April hit a 10-year low. The state Labor Department releases April unemployment rates for Nassau, Suffolk and Long Island as a whole on Tuesday.

MONDAY: Earnings from scientific equipment maker Agilent Technologies.

TUESDAY: The Commerce Department releases new-home sales for April. Earnings: AutoZone.

WEDNESDAY: April existing home sales from the National Association of Realtors. Also, the Federal Reserve releases the minutes from its May 3 meeting. Earnings: HP, Lowe’s, Calvin Klein brand owner PVH, Tiffany.

THURSDAY: Business group HIA-LI holds its annual trade show and conference (nwsdy.li/hiashow) at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood-Grant Campus. Also, jobless benefits claims for the week ended May 20 from the U.S. Labor Department. Earnings: Best Buy, Costco.

FRIDAY: The Commerce Department posts its second estimate of first-quarter GDP. The first estimate indicated the U.S. economy grew at its weakest pace in three years. Also from the Commerce Department: durable goods orders for April.
