A hundred banks have collapsed so far this year, the largest number in a year since the early 1990s, at the height of the savings-and-loan crisis. Some experts say 300 to 400 more banks could fail in the next couple of years.
The 100th bank was Partners Bank in Florida. Financialinstitutions nationwide have collapsed under the weight of souredreal estate loans and the recession.
