Hofstra students' app wins funding at competition

Two groups of Hofstra University students put their start-up ideas to the test Friday by competing in the first-ever Cross-Campus Challenge, with one team taking home second prize for their idea of a mobile application to help forgetful boyfriends and husbands.

The competition, run by Capital One Bank in Manhattan, pitted teams of student entrepreneurs from Hofstra University, LaGuardia Community College and New Jersey Institute of Technology against each other to compete for up to $3,000 in seed funding.

Boyfriend’s Best Friend, an app that helps remind boyfriends of important occasions with their significant others and suggest gift ideas, won $2,000 in their second prize finish.

SmartLine, a wait-list management system for restaurants that do not take reservations, was the other Hofstra business that competed.
