The expansion of an Amneal Pharmaceuticals factory in South Yaphank represents a large portion of the generic drugs maker’s three-year, $120-million building plan, executives said recently.

Amneal, based in Bridgewater, N.J., will spend $50 million to quadruple its factory at 50 Horseblock Rd. Another $70 million will go to improvements on facilities in New Jersey and Kentucky.

The South Yaphank expansion will add 400 of the more than 500 jobs that Amneal expects to create between this year and 2014. The 10-year-old company now employs 752 people locally -- in South Yaphank, Hauppauge and Commack.

“This major investment in our U.S. operations will more than double Amneal’s production volume and add hundreds of jobs while maintaining our dedication to superior quality in our products as well as throughout our organization,” said Chintu Patel, chief executive and co-founder.
