Actress Nikki Reed (Twilight, Lords of Dogtown) and skate legend Tony Alva were among the celebrity judges that gave high school students from Plainview-Old Bethpage runner-up honors in a national design competition for sports footwear and apparel company Vans in California earlier this month.

JFK High School students made the final four in the Vans Custom Culture Art & Design Showcase, chosen from among 326 submissions across 48 states, and their work is on display at the Orange County Museum of Art. (You can see the four finalists, but the voting is obviously over.)  Students Christopher Arena, Brianna Bollettieri, Melissa Buccella, Kjersti Faret, Lynn Golan, Megan Naftol, Ena Otaka, Nicole Paternoster, Brooke Schaub, Sonia Sethi, Jeffrey Weisz and teachers Heather Koines and Carla Loeven took a trip to California for the competition. Shown above are shoes Kennedy senior Faret made for the trip out West.
