Sentry Technology reports sales drop, loss widens
SKVY.OB says new orders may help next quarter figures
Sentry Technology Corp., a manufacturer of closed-circuit televisions and other security systems, said Thursday sales were lower and its losses widened in the first quarter, compared with the same period last year.
The company, based in Ronkonkoma, said that it lost $887,000 in the quarter, compared with a loss of $724,000 in the first quarter of 2007.
Sentry Technology said sales in the latest quarter were $2 million, compared with $2.6 million in the year ago quarter.
On a per-share basis, Sentry Technology said it lost 1 cent, the same as in the first quarter of last year.
Peter Murdoch, Sentry Technology's president and chief executive, said in a statement that sales were lower as a result of several large orders that were "received too late in the quarter to be installed and recognized" in revenues for the period.
Murdoch said that as a result, Sentry Technology's backlog of orders increased to $5.6
million, compared with $1.7 million at the end of March '07.
The company said several strategic sales were closed in the quarter -- one to the Mexico City Metro and the other to "an important customer in the courier business."
