Part-time workforce jumps as employers cut back
The number of full-time workers in the United States forced to work part-time because of business conditions shot up over the past year -- from 4.9 million in October 2008 to 7 million last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Employers are "trying to stretch their budgets," said Ken Goldstein, labor economist with The Conference Board.
