October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Better Business Bureau is partnering with the National Cyber Security Alliance to help business owners create a “culture of cybersecurity” with a five-step approach to improving security within small businesses and protecting sensitive customer and employee data. The campaign is being announced as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
The five-step approach created by BBB and NCSA employs the National Institute of Standards and Technology cybersecurity framework, recommended by the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Trade Commission’s “Start with Security” guidelines. BBB and NCSA have developed programs and hand-out materials that businesses can use during National Cyber Security Awareness Month and throughout the year.
“Once again, we have a wonderful opportunity to partner with NCSA in a meaningful way,” said Mary E. Power, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the umbrella organization for 113 BBBs across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. “BBB professionals across North America are available to speak to business leaders, employers, and community groups about how these critical cybersecurity measures can help protect businesses, their employees and their customers.”
“Information about cybersecurity can be a bit overwhelming,” said Michael Kaiser, president of NCSA, “so we’ve distilled the most sound advice available into a simplified, five-step approach that any business can use right away to check its current operations, train employees on best practices, and decrease the risk of a cybersecurity incident.”
The two partnering organizations identified the most common cyber threats to small businesses based on the “2015 Data Breach Investigations Report” from Verizon, an NCSA sponsor and a BBB Accredited Business and National Partner.
BBB leaders across North America are available for presentations to community and business groups on “5 Steps to Better Business Cybersecurity,” instructions that any business can begin implementing immediately, including take-home materials (a resource guide and a technology checklist).
