Innovative districts nationwide honored in DA’s tri-annual award program.
Trumbull, CT (PRWEB) November 02, 2015
In its November edition, District Administration magazine has honored 35 more school districts as Districts of Distinction. This is the fourth round of honorees in this national recognition program, which kicked off its inaugural round one year ago this month.
Districts of Distinction was created by District Administration magazine to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that work. Honorees were selected based on the quantifiable results and replicability of their initiatives. The November 2015 Districts of Distinction honorees were selected by the magazine’s editors out of numerous nominations.
The 35 school systems honored in this round of Districts of Distinction, from 19 states, have launched programs that range from preventing dropouts and increasing college acceptance rates to fostering early language skills for children in poverty.
For example, early-college high school students in New York’s Ballston Spa Central School District dual-enroll for free in community college courses that lead to an associate degree in clean energy, information technology or entrepreneurship. In Topeka Public Schools, administrators built a Minority Leadership Academy to prepare teachers of color for leadership positions and to better reflect the student population demographics in the staff. And in 2001, Palos Verdes Peninsula USD became one of the first districts in the nation to launch a high school engineering and robotics program, which has since spread to all schools in the district and boasts more female participants than the national average for STEM programming.
“It has been exciting to see the growth of Districts of Distinction in its first year,” says JD Solomon, editorial director at District Administration magazine. “We hope our readers have been inspired by the innovation of these honorees to create successful initiatives in their own districts.”
