Healthcare is about the patient. This seems so obvious, but for years patients were expected to accept healthcare delivery from systems designed to please doctors, financiers, or insurers.
No more. As Humana Chief Medical Officer Roy A. Beveridge, MD, writes in the current issue of The American Journal of Managed Care, today’s retail-based healthcare environment demands partnerships with patients that give them tools to prevent and manage chronic conditions, not only to save money but also to keep the patient who has diabetes from ending up with pneumonia or a trip to the hospital.
Beveridge’s commentary, “The Path to Value Through the Use of Holistic Care,” is the latest installment in the series celebrating the 20th anniversary of the journal’s publication.
The need for value-based care serves both patient needs and broader healthcare goals, Beveridge writes. HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell has set ambitious goals for Medicare reimbursement: 50% of all payments must be tied to value-based payment models by 2018.
That means not forgetting that patients are consumers of care. “Today’s patients are asking for—and it’s up to us to deliver—predictable pricing, high-quality care, and a seamless customer experience,” he writes.
