Leading logistics and supply chain experts explore the key trends and challenges that are set to impact the industry and how they’re preparing for these inevitable changes at eft's 3PL and CSCO Summit
(PRWEB) May 09, 2016
A recent Q&A published by research outfit eft has revealed the biggest challenges facing senior supply chain and C-level logistics executives at Johnson Controls, XPO, Caterpillar, CEVA, Universal, Build Direct and more. In these snapshot interviews respondents mapped out the landscape they are attempting to navigate, exploring how they envisage the future, where they are investing and what role innovation will play.
Some of the eye-opening revelations highlight the main barriers to driving industry talent (especially from a high-school level), unmask the true significance of data on 3PL-customer relationships and disclose the influence of drones, robotics and prescriptive analytics on their businesses. In an industry that is typically slower to adopt new ‘hype’ technologies and innovations, the executives revealed their thoughts on how such disruptors would be influencing the development of their 2016 strategies. Brad Jacobs, CEO of XPO Logistics explained; “In our industry, technology is the glue that allows services to be delivered with the utmost efficiency. It’s impossible to predict future innovations, but some trends in technology are already apparent. The Internet of Things is at hand – it’s estimated that 26 billion Internet-connected devices will be in use by 2020. And looking at the longer term, the practical applications of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology are likely to transform how goods are stored, handled and delivered.”
With regard to the continuous battle in developing new talent, Frank Vorrath – VP Global Supply Chain at Johnson Controls commented; “The supply chain profession is still not well understood globally and recognized compared to other professions. It doesn’t create and offer an attractive enough career path for many people to enter this profession. This seems to change but the change is at a very slow pace.”
