Attorney Generals and/or Representatives of Attorney Generals’ Offices form 21 states were in attendance. Additionally, State Senators, Directors of Departments of Corrections and numerous Sheriffs attended the Summit to learn about and to discuss the implementation of 24/7 Sobriety Programs in their states. In total, 37 states and 4 countries were represented in the 200 attendees that attended the Summit. Organizers of the Summit expect it to become an annual event.
A 24/7 Sobriety Program is an evidenced-based, innovative criminal justice concept with a non-traditional approach to reducing recidivism of drunk driving and alcohol and drug abuse. These programs are designed to cease substance abuse for a period of time long enough for the participant to regain the cognitive skills to address his/her issues and modify their behavior. The program also helps ascertain additional needs for treatment or for more intensive supervision. 24/7 programs rely on evidence based, peer reviewed research to guide the development of the program. The program is also a low cost solution requiring little, if any, taxpayer dollars.
The inaugural 24/7 Summit included information on 24/7 Sobriety programs such as the psychology behind the programs, program implementation, and case studies of states such as South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Nebraska and Montana. Additional research on the effectiveness of these programs, and proposed Best Practices were also presented and discussed.
