Webinars will feature Compelling Presentations on Mathematics Instruction and Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Students in the Digital Age, including Data Analysis and Hackathons, Quantitative Reasoning, and Math Pathways

Data indicates that over two-thirds of students are referred to one or more developmental math courses upon entry into public two-year colleges.¹ For students looking to succeed in college and beyond, strong mathematics and critical thinking skills are imperative. Pearson is committed to assisting instructors and administrators to work to improve these skills for students. From November 5-12, 2015, Pearson will host four interactive and informative mathematics education webinars for instructors that focus on developing mathematical literacy and reasoning, data analysis, and critical thinking skills for students. These presentations will also further describe Math Lit, the New Mathways Project, Quantitative Reasoning, and data analysis and hackathons. Featured presenters include leaders from the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas, Austin, Rock Valley College, Bowdoin College, and UCLA.

Title: Math Lit: In the Classroom
When: Thursday, November 5, 2015, 4:00 PM EST
Presenter: Kathleen Almy, Mathematics Professor, Rock Valley College
What: This presentation will delve into the nuts and bolts of using Math Lit in the classroom. Topics that will be discussed include the cycle structure of the book, how a lesson works, how book homework and MyMathLab work together, focus problem projects, features of the MyMathLab course, and instructor resources. Suggestions for teaching with groups will also be shared.
Title: Quantitative Reasoning: A Program for Student Success

Presenter: Eric Gaze, Chair of the Center for Learning and Teaching, Bowdoin College
What: What is Quantitative Reasoning (QR), and why is it important to teach it? QR is associated with the mathematics needed for decision making in personal, professional, and public life. Eric Gaze will present implementation ideas and best practices for creating a new quantitative reasoning course that develops the fundamental quantitative literacy crucial for informed citizenship.

What: The pathways movement has generated interest in mathematics courses that provide relevant content for non-algebraically-intensive programs of study. The New Mathways Project Quantitative Reasoning course, from the Charles A. Dana Center, provides authentic content that is rigorous, engaging, and relevant to students' home, community, and professional lives. During this webinar, audience members will hear from speaker, Connie Richardson about the evolution and relevancy of this course for both Liberal Arts and Fine Arts Students.

Title: Data Analysis: Key Skills & Concepts to Teach

Presenter: Rob Gould, Undergraduate Vice-Chair of the Department of Statistics and Director of the Center for Teaching Statistics, UCLA
What: Data "hackathons", such as the American Statistical Association DataFest, are an increasingly popular venue for college students to strengthen their data analysis skills and to network with industry professionals. Rob Gould will begin the presentation by sharing a snapshot from the 2015 ASA DataFest at UCLA, and will then explain what this tells us about the introductory statistics curriculum.
