Riviera Schools announced their Miami private school's new addition to campus: a Work in Progress space that allows children to think freely and creatively.
Miami, FL (PRWEB) October 14, 2015
On October 1, Riviera Schools' associate director, Peter Cohen, announced a new addition to the Riviera Schools campus, titled the Work in Progress (WiP) work space.
A recent Gallup-HOPE survey found that 42% of youth in grades five through 12 aspire to develop inventions that will positively impact the world at large. Because research like this has demonstrated that students are eager to use their ingenuity to solve problems both big and small, Riviera Schools created a space within their school systems that enables students to do just that.
“All sorts of gadgets including Makey Makey kits, LittleBits, VEX IQ kits, and more will be at our students’ disposal, encouraging them to define new and unique opportunities to engage, design, invent, and imagine, all without disrupting their classmates," said associate director, Peter Cohen. "The possibilities are endless.”
For the Work in Progress (WiP) space, the private school students are encouraged to let their creativity run free, treating their academic surroundings like a playground for the mind.
The WiP Workspace is open to all students, both during lunch and after school. It is designed as a flexible, no-frills, light-filled workspace, equipped with multi-functional, magnetic walls, and communal work stations.
The space was formerly the school's dance studio. When the studio was moved to a new location on campus, Riviera Schools began converting the space into the WiP room.
Associate Director Cohen attended a national school convention in early 2015, where he first heard about the "make a space" concept. But Riviera Schools has taken this to a whole other level of sophistication by adding hardware currently in their possession -- even broken-down laptops and tablets are making their way to the students through this venue.
As for what the students create, develop and invent with these materials -- the decision is entirely theirs. Riviera Schools hopes to encourage its students to think freely and continue to develop their creative minds.
