Play Safe in the Sun Program at 2016 Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile
MILWAUKEE, WI (PRWEB) May 16, 2016
Thanks to a volunteer team of Chicagoland dermatologists and other medical professionals, the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) and the Chicago Dermatological Society will offer free skin cancer screenings and sun safety education for runners and spectators at the Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile race on Saturday, May 28, 2016.
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated three million cases of skin cancer per year could be prevented by proper protection from ultraviolet light exposure. Runners in particular may face a heightened risk of developing skin cancer, due to prolonged sun exposure, coupled with the challenges associated with protecting the skin while running outdoors and perspiring.
Loyola University Dermatologic Surgeon and WDS Service Committee Co-Chair, Rebecca Tung, MD, and Cindy Krol, serve as co-chairs of this particular WDS community outreach event. Sponsored by La Roche-Posay and known as Play Safe in the Sun, the program, along with several local dermatologists, will provide free skin cancer screenings, sun safety education materials, and free sunscreen samples for event participants.
“We are pleased to provide this important service to Chicago’s running community—where we often see a higher incidence of skin cancer. A skin check only takes a few minutes, and it can save your skin and potentially, save your life!” – Dr. Tung
