Talbots Inc., a Massachusetts-based women's apparel retailer struggling with sales declines that worsened during the recession, is closing its Cold Spring Harbor store at the end of this month, the company said Tuesday.

A Talbots spokeswoman at its headquarters in Hingham said it operated 589 stores in 47 states, the District of Columbia and Canada in the third fiscal quarter of last year.

"The store at Cold Spring Harbor will close at the end of the month," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail. "At this time we don't have any plans to close other stores in the area."

The Web site said the company employs about 12,000 worldwide. It was unclear how many are employed at the Cold Spring Harbor store.

Talbots calls itself a retailer and direct marketer of "women's classic clothing, shoes and accessories." It was established in 1947.

In December, the company announced a complex financial restructuring under which it will merge with publicly traded BPW Acquisition Corp., a Stamford, Conn.-based special-purpose acquisition company.

It simultaneously announced that it had swung from a loss to a profit in its fiscal third quarter ended Oct 19. It said adjusted third-quarter net income from continuing operations totaled $17.2 million or $0.31 per diluted share, excluding restructuring and impairment charges, compared to last year's net loss of $12.4 million or $0.23 per share.
