Uniondale-based developer Scott Rechler has been chosen to lead the board of a nonprofit planning group.

Rechler, who is chairman and chief executive of RXR Realty LLC, will become chairman of the board of directors of the Regional Plan Association on Friday, the Manhattan-based group announced this week.

He takes over from Elliot G. Sander, who has been board chairman since 2010 and will continue to serve as a director.

Rechler was chosen for his “deep understanding of public policy, infrastructure and business and decades-long commitment to the metropolitan region,” the association’s president, Tom Wright, said in a statement. “Scott is joining RPA at a pivotal moment as we develop a long-range plan for the region, the fourth in the organization’s nearly 100-year history.”
