Compact cameras for advanced shooters

Fujifilm FinePix X10 CNET rating: 3.5 stars out

Fujifilm FinePix X10

CNET rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 (Very good)

The good: With a nice, fast lens, attractive retro design, and speedy performance, the Fujifilm FinePix X10 hits a lot of important high notes.

The bad: The camera has some image-quality-related weaknesses, not the least of which is that to get the best photos you have to shoot in auto at reduced resolutions.

The cost: $599 to $599.95

The bottom line: There's a lot to like about the Fujifilm FinePix X10, but advanced shooters may be frustrated by the trade-offs for the best photos, especially since the FinePix X10 is more expensive than its competitors.

Sure, you want the photo quality of a dSLR, but do you often find you're leaving the camera at home because it's so large? The compromise is a compact camera with a sensor larger than on a typical point-and-shoot--sometimes even the same size as on a consumer or midrange dSLR--and sufficient manual control over aperture and shutter speed to allow a measure of the creativity to which you're accustomed.
