Full-size megazooms compared

Canon PowerShot SX30 IS CNET rating: 3.5 stars

Canon PowerShot SX30 IS

CNET rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 (Very good)

The good: Flexible lens range; excellent image stabilization; features for every kind of user.
The bad: Generally soft, noisy photos at full size; overall slow performance; no raw capture.

The cost: $369- $517

The bottom line: The Canon PowerShot SX30 IS is a point-and-shoot camera with a 35x zoom lens. As long as you're not expecting much more than that, it's a very good megazoom.

Call them bridge cameras, longzooms, superzooms, or megazooms (as we do), they're all pretty much the same thing: a large lens slapped on the front of a point-and-shoot camera.

While that's a bit of an oversimplification, the fact remains that though these are full-featured models with digital SLR-style bodies, their photo quality and shooting performance are still those of a compact camera. However, some are definitely better than others. ©2014 CBS Interactive Inc., a CBS Company. All rights reserved. Used by permission
