Corsino Cakes' chef and owner on Food Network's 'Sugar Dome'
Derek Corsino, chef and owner of Corsino Cakes in Wappingers Falls, will battle it out on the latest Food Network competitive edible art show, “Sugar Dome,” set to air at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26.
“You have to be prepared for some crazy stuff to happen,” said Corsino, who will be making his third appearance on the network.
“Sugar Dome” features three teams who fight hard for the champion's title and $15,000 prize. Each team is made up of a cake designer, sugar artist and top specialty craftsperson. Corsino will team up with a chocolatier and metal sculptor to create a breathtaking sugary showpiece based on the theme of daredevil stunts.
A veteran of two Food Network Challenge shows, Corsino thrives on the televised chaos and welcomes the unknown. He also likes to bend the rules. For his Renaissance Festival Cake entry, instead of harkening back to the Age of the Enlightenment, Corsino created “Sir-Lounge-A-Lot”, a cake inspired by contemporary Renn Faire troubadours in sneakers questing for cheesy fries. He came in second.
Corsino especially looks forward to working with a metal sculptor on the upcoming show. “My brother welds and my cousin is a certified welder. I’m a cake designer with metal experience.”
Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, Corsino is a Culinary Institute of America graduate. Corsino Cakes is at 2653 E. Main St. in Wappingers Falls. You can get more info by calling 845-632-6300 or visiting www.corsinocakes.com.
