'Spring Awakening' starts run at Elmwood Playhouse
"Spring Awakening," the eight-time Tony award-winning musical, opened a one-month run at the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack on Friday.
Based on the 1892 play by Frank Wedekind, the musical is a coming of age story that follows 12 teenagers in repressive 19th century Germany as they discover their sexuality. The musical features Grammy Award-winning music by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater and choreography by Cal Chiang.
“When people think of community theater, they think of amateur hour, but that’s not the case here,” said the Elmwood Playhouse director, Claudia Stefany. "It’s a real departure from what Elmwood is used to and I think they will be pleasantly surprised.”
Although sticking closely to the original Broadway production, Stefany did cut out some of the sexual content she felt was unnecessary and distracting to focus on the story.
“The way it is staged is beautiful," Stefany said of the sexual content that remains in the play. “You get the idea that it is beautiful and not gratuitous.”
On Broadway, "Spring Awakening" helped launch the career of "Glee" star Lea Michelle, who attended at the Rockland Country Day School in Congers. This production will feature mainly local, college-age actors, including Audrey Patricola, Jose Velez and Andrew Marcinak, who attend Rockland Community College; T.J. Larke, another actor in the musical, attends the nearby St. Thomas Aquinas College.
There will be three performances of "Spring Awakening" each week through Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets, available online or through the box office at 845-353-1313, are $25 with a $2 discount for seniors and students on Fridays and Sundays. "Spring Awakening" features sexual situations, mature themes and strong language and is not recommended for children under 15.
