'Star Trek: Into Darkness' teaser trailer revealed

Director J.J Abrams, second left, accompanied by actor

The "Star Trek: Into Darkness" teaser trailer sent Trekkers into a tizzy today, with fans raving about snippets they've seen of the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel.

Abrams, who graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville/Yonkers, directed and produced the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot that hauled in more than $250 million at the domestic box office. Its sequel is slated for wide release May 17, but when I interviewed him in September, Abrams was tight-lipped about, well, everything.

"It's a little too early to talk specifics," he told me, "but I would say that I would hope that fans and nonfans of 'Star Trek' are in for a big, emotional ride."

It appears the film will live up to that kind of promise, with a teaser that puts plenty of darkness into "Into Darkness."

A few early thoughts about the trailer:

1. Cool.
2. COOL!
3. (passes out)
