'Veronica Mars' movie: Max Greenfield on board, says show's creator
Looking forward to the “Veronica Mars” movie? Then no doubt you’ll be excited to learn that the upcoming film will have a Hudson Valley connection. According to the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, Max Greenfield will reprise his role as Deputy Leo D’Amato in the film.
In an interview with E! Online, Thomas said the film will take place 10 years after the show concluded in 2007, fittingly enough at Veronica Mars’ 10-year high school reunion. He added that although he hopes that many of the show’s cast members return for the big-screen version, he revealed that Greenfield, a Dobbs Ferry native, is already on board.
"Max is driving a hard bargain to reprise his role as Deputy Leo. His direct quote was that he'd take no pay and fly himself to the set," Thomas said. "He'll be the Leo we've known and loved. We'll find him working as a detective for the San Diego Police Department."
Kristen Bell, who played the series’ titular teen detective, and Thomas announced last week via a Kickstarter page their aim to raise $2 million in 30 days to make a “Veronica Mars” movie. Because the “Veronica Mars” Kickstarter campaign raised the full amount within 24 hours of the announcement -- and has earned more than $3.6 million to date -- the movie has been approved and is expected to begin filming this summer and released in theaters next year.
Although the show lasted only three seasons, it developed a cult following among loyal fans who had long been hoping for a film version. “Veronica Mars” also has launched the careers of quite a few of its cast members. Besides Greenfield, who currently stars on the hit Fox series “New Girl” and earned an Emmy nomination for the role, the show also served as a launching pad for Bell, who stars in Showtime’s “House of Lies,” and “Les Miserables” actress Amanda Seyfried.
