Kent State researchers observed and timed about 1,000 pedestrians on a 50-yard stretch of walkway and found that 20 percent used a phone during the walk to either talk or text.

The phone users walked at a significantly slower speed, which researchers said “may sabotage the benefits” walking brings to cardiovascular health.
