Social networking site LinkedIn launched a new feature Tuesday with blog posts from 150 influential people around the world. That group included President Barack Obama, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, businessman Richard Branson, World Bank president Jim Kim, and one of Long Island's own -- Steve Rubel of Westbury.
Rubel, the executive vice president of global strategy and insights at public relations firm Edelman, will be writing short posts on LinkedIn about changes in the media industry. Those with LinkedIn accounts will also be able to "follow" Rubel on LinkedIn, a new function created for the 150 "influencers" that LinkedIn has chosen to start their own blogs.
Rubel's first post is called "Field Notes on the Future of Media." He said in an interview he will focus each post on the personal story of an individual working in media and how that person is innovating and dealing with the challenges of a rapidly changing industry. Rubel has been speaking with these types of individuals for the past year as part of his job to analyze media trends.
"All these folks I'm meeting. Some are junior, some are senior. Some work in a start-up, some work in a big company," he said. "But that willingness to be adventurous and inventive is inspiring. . . . We all have a lot we can learn from them and those lessons should get out."
Rubel said LinkedIn approached him about writing the feature about a month and a half ago and gave him free rein over his topic. He was encouraged to write three posts a week, but said he will realistically write once or twice a week.
LinkedIn is a client of Edelman overseas, but Rubel said he does not do work for them in his job at Edelman. He has in the past met with LinkedIn executives in charge of the news aspect of the operation as part of his research on the media industry. Rubel is also a columnist at Advertising Age magazine and blogs about media trends.
