KEY EVENT:Mood swings. As the New Year began, consumers and business owners were feeling pessimistic about the economy, according to several surveys released last month. Is the gloomy outlook lifting? Three gauges of sentiment scheduled for release this week may give answers.

MONDAY: Earnings from Amityville alarm systems maker Napco Security Technologies.

TUESDAY: National Federation of Independent Business posts its small- business optimism index for February. January's reading was one of the lowest in the survey's history. Earnings: Avon, Coca-Cola, McGraw-Hill.

WEDNESDAY: January retail sales and December business inventories, both from Commerce Department. Earnings: Comcast, Melville medical products distributor Henry Schein, MetLife, Whole Foods Market.

THURSDAY: Claims for jobless benefits from the Labor Department and the Bloomberg consumer comfort index, both for the week ended Feb. 9. Earnings: CBS, PepsiCo, Molson Coors.

FRIDAY: University of Michigan's consumer confidence survey for early February. Also, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York posts the February Empire State survey, an update on New York manufacturing activity, and the U.S. Federal Reserve releases January industrial production. Earnings: Uniondale real estate investment trust Arbor Realty, Campbell Soup, J.M. Smucker.
