If you have ever traveled through Montauk and noticed a tremendous structure looking like a radar dish on the horizon, the fact is that once – during World War II – the government placed a military installation along the coast to bolster national defense. The base has since been decommissioned (with much of the former military structures still restricted, off-limits and guarded), but the park built around it includes woodlands, beaches, freshwater wetlands, trails, wildlife, views and round-the-clock surf fishing (to fishermen with permits). In addition, it is also considered the site of the “Montauk Project,” a program posited by conspiracy theorists that this location was used by the government for secret projects involving psychic experimentation, time travel and other unusual pursuits.
