Are you ready to be amazed? We attended the "Cirkopolis Cirque Éloize" show in at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University in Manhattan, and we were absolutely amazed. "Cirkopolis" is circus, dance and theater all in one. The show made us oohhh and ahhhh, laugh and think. The show included jugglers, contortionists and aerial artists, all making the impossible look easy. The performers were dancing in life-size wheels called the German Wheel and the Cyr Wheel. We were so impressed with the performance and inspired by the performers themselves.
We were able to talk with two of the performers after the show and we learned so much. Lauren Herley was the aerial artist who performed on a rope; she made herself look like a human yo-yo. The stunts she was able to do hanging from a rope made our eyes bulge out of our heads.
She was very passionate about her performance and said she was inspired by musicians and her mom, who was a singer and a pianist.
She said it takes a lot of practice and dedication to become a successful performer. Lauren told us you must be strong and flexible to be able to do the aerial performance. She said it is not like a regular circus -- everyone's performances rely on the other performers. She said this makes them more like a family and that is important since there are times when they can be away from family for years.
Dominique Bouchard was a diabolo performer, which is a form of juggling. He showed us how to use the diabolo and tricks that he has made up himself. We asked if he ever got nervous before a show and he said only if he knows his dad is in the audience -- he wants to make him proud. He also told us that New York was one of his favorite cities. Dominique also told us that the circus wasn't what he planned on doing at first. He was going to be a doctor or a physical therapist. He knew he wanted to do something with the body. Performing in "Cirkoplois" allows him to work with his body.
We learned so much from both Lauren and Dominique; they really inspired us to work hard to make our dreams a reality. "Cirkopolis" is a great show for people of all ages. The performers are extremely talented and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what they could possibly do next.
The show runs through Jan. 5. For tickets, visit them online: nyuskirball.org
